An ounce of flower averaged $47.83 at the register in September 2026, or $1.71 a gram, across the 12 states Headset tracks. A single gram averaged $8.09. Buy 28 times as much flower and you pay about a fifth as much per gram. That gap is the main fact about the cannabis ounce price in 2026, and it puts pressure on every smaller package on the shelf.
Headset's figures are pre-tax and after discounts. The discounts keep getting bigger, too.
The per-gram price drops at every step up in package size. The steepest percentage drop, about 43%, is between the half ounce and the ounce.
| Package | Average price | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | $8.09 | $8.09 |
| Eighth (3.5g) | $20.23 | $5.78 |
| Quarter (7g) | $28.82 | $4.12 |
| Half ounce (14g) | $41.72 | $2.98 |
| Ounce (28g) | $47.83 | $1.71 |

The half ounce is the odd one out. It costs $6.11 less than an ounce for half the flower, and the quarter is only $19 cheaper than the ounce. The eighth is still the most familiar shelf price at about $20, but it costs more than three times as much per gram as the ounce.
The small sizes are coming down to meet the large ones. Packaged flower fell from $3.70 to $3.56 a gram between September 2025 and September 2026, a 3.8% drop. Single grams were down 6.3% and quarters 4.9%. Half ounces and ounces held roughly flat.
That makes the ounce look like a floor. Our reading is that an ounce at $1.71 a gram is already priced close to what the flower costs the store, so there is little left to cut. The cuts land on the smaller packages instead.
Discounting comes on top of that. The average discount rate rose from 23.6% to 27.1% over the same 12 months, so more than a quarter of the shelf price now goes back to shoppers at checkout. Wholesale prices are dropping too. CannIntel put wholesale flower declines at roughly 18% to 40% in mature markets in the first half of 2026, as cited by Hoodline.
Headset's flower category page puts the average flower item at about $25, up less than 1% from a year earlier. Per-gram prices fell 3.8% while the average item price stayed flat. That combination suggests shoppers are moving to bigger packages and leaving with more flower per visit rather than spending less.
Illinois is the clearest state example. Through the first half of 2026, dispensaries sold about 27.6 million items, up 9%, while revenue fell 18% to $684.3 million. Part of that gap comes from reporting: the state's move to Metrc in mid-2025 started counting discounts at checkout, which earlier figures did not do, according to IDFPR. Through August, Illinois had sold 37.5 million items for $933 million.
The national average hides a 2.3x spread. An eighth averaged $12.74 in Oregon and $29.54 in Ohio in September.
| Lowest eighth prices | Highest eighth prices | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Oregon | $12.74 | Ohio | $29.54 |
| Arizona | $14.12 | Maryland | $29.30 |
| Michigan | $14.32 | Illinois | $25.99 |
| Colorado | $15.14 | Missouri | $24.93 |

Oregon, Colorado, and Michigan are among the longest-running adult-use markets. Missouri, Maryland, and Ohio opened adult-use sales in 2023 and 2024, and Ohio and Maryland still price an eighth at about double Michigan's average. As those newer markets add stores and wholesale supply, their prices will probably drift toward the low end. Michigan and Oregon show what a dispensary's margin looks like after that happens.
Packaging suppliers should expect order mixes to shift. If larger packages keep gaining, stores need fewer one-gram and eighth containers per pound of flower and more ounce and half-ounce bags and jars.
Brands selling eighths are selling the most visible shelf price in the store, and it is the one under the most pressure. The average eighth already costs more than three times as much per gram as the average ounce. A premium eighth costs more again, and store buyers will ask what justifies the gap.
Software, payments, and analytics vendors are selling to stores that give back 27 cents of every shelf dollar. A store that can track promotions, cut shrink, or lower card fees by a point gets more out of it now than it would in a market growing 20% a year.
The high-price states are where prices have the furthest to fall, so the margin squeeze there is mostly still ahead.
